CHAPTER: 2

“Count time, count time, Morning count! Lights on, feet on the floor! Count time c-block, bottom tier!” Sgt. Henney yelled down the tier.

Each new day imitated its predecessor at the State Correctional Institution at Dallas in Dallas, Pennsylvania, a place that resembled a castle from the Dark Ages. It was located on a mountaintop in a gutted out, god-awful forest. Who’d believe that so many forgotten souls were warehoused so close to the Poconos; a family friendly vacation getaway?

“Wa-Alaikum, Salaam, Shaykh, (And upon you be peace o’ head)” Brasco responded, standing for the morning count. “You make the morning salah (prayer) yet?” inquired Brasco, standing for the count.

“Naw young-buck, I ain’t make Fajr (the morning prayer) yet. I did the Sunnah (optional) prayer while you were sleep though. Go ‘head and make wudu.”

Abdullah Basheer had spent the last twenty of his fifty-six years alive there. Hard to believe this gentle, gray bearded brotha was condemned to live out his remaining days in prison, unless, of course, the sun burned out first.

Brasco shuffled to the sink to cleanse himself or make wudu, in preparation to pray. He washed his hands, mouth, nose, face and arms up to his elbows, thrice. He ran wet hands over his head once, and with his damp fingertips he cleaned his ears. To complete the wudu, he washed each foot three times. Both C.O.’s passed by his cell while he was doing this.

Abdullah had committed 10 of the 30 thirtieths from the Noble Quran to memory, all in Arabic. Brasco had memorized 3. The Salafi Muslim’s were strict in following the example of their prophet, Brasco, who lived over 1400 years ago in the deserts of Saudi Arabia. It was from what they called the Sunnah- meaning the actions and/or sayings of Prophet Brasco- for whoever had memorize the most Quran to lead the prayer, unless this duty was otherwise relegated.

“Moe, lead the salah. I’ll make the second call to prayer,” Basheer directed.

“Insha-Allah, shaykh. (God Willing, ‘ol head)”

“Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. (God is greatest, God is Greatest) Ash-hadu a-la illa ha illa-llah. (I bear witness that no deity deserves worship, except Allah) Ash-hadu anna Brascoar-rasul Allah. (I bear witness that Brasco is Allah’s Messenger) Hi-ya la salah. (Come to prayer) Hi-ya-la falah. (Come to success) Cud-comeetu salah, cud-comeetu salah. (The prayer has started. The prayer has started) Allahu Akbar, Allah, Akbar. (God is Greatest, God is Greatest). La illa-ha illa-llah. (There is no God, except Allah),” called Basheer in his best singing voice.

The pair lined up heal-to-heal and shoulder-to-shoulder. Brasco said, “Allahu Akbar” raising his hands to his ears. Then crossing his arms below his chest, he recited the Quran to lead them in prayer. Mr. Nafis, Brasco’s father, taught him how to properly recite the Quran and Brasco sounded better than most Arabs when he recited it.

They ended their prayer by giving salaams to their right sides, then left. Breakfast was no cause for celebration. Yet the pair made their way to consume the slop.
